City goes nuts trying to spend Rs 1000 and 500 notes - SABSE BADA RUPAIYA
Petrol pumps, bus and train ticket counters, medical shops, cabbies, autorickshaw drivers, toll plazas, even vegetable vendors and grocers... no one had a rupee to change for the hapless Mumbaikars yesterday
Housewives returning home without grocer ies, chaos at toll tax points, chemists and petrol pumps turning away customers, people queueing up in front of railway ticket counters, and small establishment owners not even bothering to open their shops... a never-seen-before crisis gripped Mumbai on Wednesday, after the overnight scrapping of currency notes of higher denominations.Before we get into the details of the harrowing Wednesday, here's some good news: 1: Most banks will remain open till 6 pm starting today, and a few till 8 pm. 2: The banks will also remain open on Saturday and Sunday.3: Toll tax has been suspended on national highways and all state roads in Maharashtra, including the five entry points into Mumbai, and the BandraWorli Sea Link, till Friday mid night.
While a majority of Mumbaikars agreed with the Centre's move, they were extremely upset at being inconvenienced.
