Nothing could gladden the hearts of common people of the subcontinent, if what Ram Madhav wishes could come true. However, the most insurmountable hurdle is to accommodate 3 different and opposing ideologies, Hindutva, Islam and Marxism in a vast country, where all these ideologies have found deep roots and no ruling democratic majority can be generous enough to accommodate the other left-outs. With goodwill spreading out with sincere gestures and a push from the overlord the US, an attempt should be welcomed, if it does not involve bloodshed and is centered on academic and consultative process, lasting may be decades with clear understanding that we all are ONE PEOPLE and would have full individual and community freedom to follow our own ideologies within agreed parameters.

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav has said that he believes India, Pakistan and Bangladesh will reunite one day to form an “undivided India” through “popular goodwill”.

“The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) still believes that one day these parts, which have for historical reasons separated only 60 years ago, will again, through popular goodwill, come together and Akhand Bharat (undivided India) will be created,” Madhav told Doha-based Al Jazeera news network in an interview.

“As an RSS member, I also hold on to that view,” he said, clarifying he did not mean to “wage a war” against any of the neighbours.

“That does not mean we wage war on any country, [or that] we annex any country. Without war, through popular consent, it can happen,” he said.

“If two Germanys can come together, what makes you believe that India and Pakistan can’t come together?”

On Saturday, Madhav told HT that he presented the RSS view in response to a question that asked whether the RSS still held on to that belief.

Madhav is a national executive member of the RSS, a right-wing outfit considered to be the ideological parent of the ruling BJP. Madhav said the RSS ideology is for the supremacy of India and the organisation is neither “fascist” nor “aggressive”.

The programme containing Madhav’s comments was apparently recorded in London before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surprise visit to Pakistan on Christmas when he met his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif, and discussed ways of improving ties between the two countries. The programme was aired late on Friday night.

Speaking on writers and intellectuals returning their awards to protest against “growing intolerance”, Madhav said in the Al Jazeera interview that they were doing it “to defame the government and in turn to defame the image of India”. The BJP leader said the mode of their protest was “wrong”.

Madhav said India is “a land where a particular way of life, a particular culture or civilisation, is practised”.

“We call it Hindu - do you have any objection? India has one culture. We are one culture, one people, one nation,” he told the channel.

On the Jammu and Kashmir issue, he said: “The only outstanding issue with regard to the Kashmir problem is the Kashmir under Pakistan occupation.”

“The Kashmir that is an integral part of India, it has been proved time and again that it’s an integral part of India,” he said.

Mr. Fali Nariman, the doyen of the Indian bar, has spoken against the growing intolerance in the country, and so has the Indian President and many others.

But without instigating communal hatred and communal riots how can the BJP win elections ?

BJP normally has only the upper caste Hindu votes. But the upper caste Hindus (Brahmins, Rajputs, banias,etc) are altogether numerically only about 15% of the population in north Indian states.(they are much less in south India).

An election cannot be won by getting only 15% votes. So how can the BJP win elections ?

For that there only two ways.

1. Promise ‘vikas’ ( development ), which will create an illusion that millions of jobs will now be created under BJP rule. In the May 2014 Lok Sabha elections this was the magic slogan which ensured victory for the BJP. The youth in particular, cutting through caste and religious lines, voted en masse for the BJP led by Modi, thinking that now they will all get jobs.( the voting age was reduced from 21 to 18 in 1988). After all, all youth, whatever their religion or caste, want jobs.

But after the Lok Sabha elections it was realized that this promise was hollow and a sham, and the youth were taken for a ride and left high and dry..There is no vikas, and no jobs. Jobs cannot be created by empty slogans. They can only be created when the economy is rapidly expanding, but the Indian economy is stagnant. So the vikas slogan has now become ineffective, despite all talk of Digital India and all that kind of jazz.

2. So the BJP has now to fall back on the other, traditional, way to win elections :instigate communal hatred and riots, of which they are experts.

Hindus are ordinarily divided on caste lines ( it was recently reported that in Bihar even kitchens of policemen are separate for different castes ). But when the communal poison is spread they often unite against Muslims.

This idea was best developed by Advani, the poor chap who is now licking his wounds and saying ‘ Et tu Brute ‘ to his erstwhile chelas Modi and Jaitley who have unceremoniously kicked him aside..

It was Advani who started rath yatra and the Ram Janmabhumi agitation which resulted in the BJP’s seats in the Lok Sabha going up from 2 in 1984 to 161 in 196 and 183 in 1999, never mind what damage was done to the country by the demolition of the Babri Masjid.

The attacks on Muslims in Muzaffarnagar, Ballabhgarh, the lynching of Ikhlaque in Dadri, the hate speeches of Adityanath, Sadhvi Prachi, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti ( of ‘ haramzada ‘ fame ) etc, and the deliberate spreading of communalism in rural areas all fit into this pattern.

What is the real nature of the BJP ? It is really dominated by the RSS, as its leadership and cadres are from the RSS. And the RSS is rabidly anti Muslim and anti Christian.

The BJP claims to profess ‘Hindutva’. But in fact it does not really represent Hinduism, and its leaders and rank and file have no knowledge of the great Hindu intellectualism in the past ( see my speech ‘ Sanskrit as a language of Science’ available online and in my blog justicekatju.blogspot.in ). All it has in its ideology is communal hatred, and pseudo claims of our past achievements like the claim that our ancestors had invented aircraft (pushpak viman), atom bombs, guided missiles, etc and had discovered genetic engineering and head transplant technique (Ganesh) in ancient India, which are all false.They have little knowledge of the real great achievements of our ancestors like the decimal system, plastic surgery, construction of ports as in Lothal, and the great discoveries by Aryabhatta, Brahmagupta, Bhaskar etc in mathematics, Sushrut and Charak in medicine, Panini and Patanjali in grammar, etc

So, Mr. Nariman, do not live in a world of dreams

We, Islam critics, have never harmed a single Muslim, while those who praise Islam have much blood on their hands.

At the India Ideas Conclave in Goa, I argued that the nature of Islam itself is a principal factor in the atrocities by Boko Haram, the Taliban and the Islamic State. They say so themselves, and I respect their right to express their own motivation. Secularists, by contrast, show their contempt for Muslims by overruling the latter’s own explicit self-justification with a different account.

Thus, in a recent TV debate, a BJP spokesperson eager to prove his secularism called the Caliphate warriors “heretics”. Internationally, British PM David Cameron (whose plan to kill Muslims and others in Syria was foiled by a negative vote in Parliament but who at least contributed to the destruction of Libya, killing many Muslims) called these self-described Islamic militants “not Muslims but monsters”. Not one of the US, UK and French leaders who have invaded Muslim countries the last 20 years was a critic of Islam. Of each of them, pro-Islamic statements can be quoted. Yet between them, they have killed numerous Muslims.

A Swiss do-gooder in my audience alleged that criticism of Islam amounts to spreading hatred against two billion Muslim fellow-men. Well, Hindus have had to live daily with indictments of their religion, even from state platforms. So, if the allegation were true, we wonder why it was never made against criticism of Hinduism. Anyway, it is untrue.

First, I have only criticised the doctrine of Islam, a belief belonging to the world of ideas, with which no one is born and which can be washed off. The extent to which those billions choose to identify with the beliefs they have been indoctrinated in, varies enormously and is up to themselves. Second, the record shows that we, Islam critics, have never harmed a single Muslim, while those who praise Islam have much blood on their hands. US Secretary of State John Kerry stated that one of the war aims in bombing Islamic State positions (this is, killing Muslims) is to “remedy the distortion of Islam”, to uphold his own rosy picture of Islam against the grim reality which the Caliphate created. So what Kerry announces literally amounts to “defending Islam by killing Muslims”. To conceal this absurdity, defenders of Islam are constrained to saying that the jihad warriors are “monsters, not Muslims”.

Coming to India, secularists claim that the RSS is against Islam and has killed Muslims. While for now I remain neutral on the latter allegation, I emphatically deny the former. If you read the Organiser every week, as I do since decades, you frequently come across accusations against Muslims, but Islam remains above criticism. So, even if the RSS is guilty of violence against Muslims, it would only prove my point: this violence is unrelated to criticism of Islam.

Everyone who claims to be a secularist or a moderate will endeavour to normalise, rather than criminalise, critical debate about religious doctrines. That would prove moderation, that is the secularist way, and that is what I have done.
